India is set to send a formidable 29-member athletics contingent to the Paris 2024 Olympics, including the reigning men’s javelin throw champion, Neeraj Chopra. The team will compete across 16 medal events.
The athletics events at Paris 2024 will commence on August 1 and conclude on August 11. A total of 48 medal events will be contested.
All track and field events will be held at the iconic Stade de France, while the race walk events will take place at Pont d’Iena. The marathon races will start from the Hôtel de Ville and finish at Les Invalides.
Paris 2024 represents a significant milestone for Indian athletics.
Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw gold at Tokyo 2020 was India’s first-ever Olympic medal in athletics, and a strong performance in Paris is crucial to maintaining the positive momentum started in Japan three years ago.
Neeraj will be in Paris to defend his title. Since his victory in Tokyo, he has won the Diamond League title in 2022 and an Asian Games gold medal in 2023. He also heads to the upcoming Olympics as the reigning world champion in his event.

Joining Neeraj in the men’s javelin competition in Paris will be Kishore Jena, who won a silver medal behind Neeraj at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023. Annu Rani, aiming for a podium finish in the women’s javelin throw, will also compete after her golden performance in Hangzhou.
The 29-member Indian athletics team for Paris 2024 includes 11 runners for the men’s and women’s relay events.
Neeraj, Annu, ace steeplechaser Avinash Sable, shot put national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor, race walker Priyanka Goswami, and relay runners Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, and Subha Venkatesan will be returning from India’s Tokyo 2020 contingent.
Muhammed Anas, part of the men’s 4x400m relay team, will be making his third consecutive appearance at the Olympic Summer Games.
Among the debutants, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary will be in the spotlight.
Jyothi won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships and a silver at the Asian Games last year. Parul won the women’s 3000m steeplechase gold and a silver in the 5000m race at the Asian Championships before reversing the event-medal order at Hangzhou.
Parul is the only Indian athlete competing in two separate individual events at Paris 2024.
Priyanka Goswami will be India’s sole representative in the women’s 20km race walk and will pair up with Suraj Panwar for the newly introduced race walk mixed marathon event.
India will have a full field in the men’s 20km race walk with three contestants. Jumpers Jeswin Aldrin, Abdulla Aboobacker, and Praveen Chithravel also aim to impress.
The Indian contingent to Paris comprises 18 men and 11 women. India will participate in eight men’s and as many women’s events. The race walk marathon event will be the only mixed team event on the schedule.
