Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor recently shared an interesting story about how he was initially dropped from the judging panel of MasterChef India because of a fee dispute involving actor Akshay Kumar. Kapoor, who is now one of India’s most renowned chefs, explained in an interview with Siddharth Kannan that he was originally approached to co-judge the cooking reality show alongside Akshay. However, Kapoor demanded a fee that was just Re 1 higher than what Akshay was being paid, which led the show’s producers to drop him from the first season.
Kapoor recalled the situation, saying, “Akshay is a dear friend and an amazing professional. When the producers informed me that they wanted both of us to judge the show, I made it clear that I had one condition: I wanted to be paid Re 1 more than Akshay.” This demand apparently puzzled the producers, leading them to replace Kapoor with someone else.

However, after Akshay Kumar successfully judged the first two seasons of MasterChef India alongside Kunal Kapur and Ajay Chopra, the producers decided to bring Kapoor back on board for the third season. “They chose to replace Akshay Kumar, and I signed on for the show under my own terms,” Kapoor revealed. Although he eventually participated in a few seasons, Kapoor mentioned that the balance between the effort required and the returns wasn’t satisfactory for him.
While Sanjeev Kapoor is widely recognized as one of India’s top chefs, it’s lesser-known that Akshay Kumar once worked as a waiter and chef before rising to fame in Bollywood.
