The number of Indian athletes participating in the Olympic Summer Games has steadily increased over the past few editions.
In Tokyo 2020, the Indian contingent comprised 124 athletes, the largest team India had ever sent to the Games. India won seven medals, its highest count in a single Olympics, including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold in men’s javelin throw.
For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian team consists of 117 athletes across 16 sports disciplines, with 70 men and 47 women competing in 69 events for 95 medals.
At 44, tennis star Rohan Bopanna is the oldest athlete representing India at Paris 2024, while 14-year-old swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu is the youngest. Athletics contributes the most athletes to the Indian contingent, with 29 players.
Trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta secured India’s first Paris 2024 quota at the 2022 ISSF World Championships but did not make the final team following national trials. Prithviraj Tondaiman was awarded the men’s trap event quota instead.
Indian shooters secured a quota in every Olympic shooting category for the first time. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) exchanged one of the pistol quotas for a women’s trap shooter after Manu Bhaker topped the national trials in women’s 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events. This freed quota went to Shreyasi Singh, who will compete in the women’s trap event.
Rudrankksh Patil, who earned a men’s 10m air rifle quota, did not make the final team either. Sandeep Singh took his place following national trials. Similarly, athletes like Tilottama Sen, Akhil Sheoran, Mehuli Ghosh, Shriyanka Sadangi, Varun Tomar, and Palak Gulia, who all earned quotas in their respective events, also missed out.
In sports like shooting and wrestling, quotas are won by countries rather than individual athletes, meaning the athlete who secured the quota can be replaced by another leading up to the Games.

National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have exclusive authority over representing their countries at the Olympic Games. Therefore, athletes’ participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
Race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh were the first Indians to qualify for athletics events at Paris 2024. In the men’s 20km race walk, four Indian athletes met the Paris Olympics qualifying standard, while one qualified via world rankings. However, each national federation can send a maximum of three athletes per event to the Olympics. Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh, and Paramjeet Singh Bisht were selected, with Ram Baboo missing out.
Priyanka and Akshdeep secured a quota for India in the marathon race walk mixed relay event, but Suraj will be partnering Priyanka in Paris.
Achieving the entry standard or securing a quota is just one part of the Olympic qualification process. NOCs have the final say on who will be selected to the NOC team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Murali Sreeshankar met the qualifying standard in men’s long jump but will not be traveling to Paris due to a knee injury ruling him out for the entire 2024 season.
India reclaimed the boxing quota in women’s 57kg through Jaismine Lamboria at the Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok in June after original quota-holder Parveen Hooda, who had booked the slot at the 2023 Asian Games, was suspended for whereabouts failures.
In badminton, players qualify based on rankings, and NOCs need to confirm their participation.
