On MS Dhoni’s DRS Success Rate: Indian Umpire Offers Frank Opinion

MS Dhoni remains one of the sharpest minds in cricket today. Renowned for his tactical brilliance, keen game awareness, and strategic thinking, Dhoni has an impressive track record when it comes to the Decision Review System (DRS). His accuracy with DRS calls from behind the stumps has even led fans to nickname it the “Dhoni Review System.” However, Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary has pointed out that while Dhoni is often close to being accurate, he doesn’t always get DRS calls right.

“It’s not always the case that Dhoni is right; sometimes it goes the other way, but he’s generally very accurate. He understands the game very well,” Chaudhary said in a conversation with Shubhankar Mishra on Mishra’s YouTube channel.

Chaudhary also had praise for young Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, noting the significant improvements he has made as a keeper in recent years.

“Rishabh Pant has improved a lot from his early days. It all comes down to experience. You watch replays and reassess your decisions,” he added. “Wicketkeepers have the best view to monitor the ball; they are still and can track its trajectory. In fact, even the best umpires sometimes base their decisions on the movements of the wicketkeepers, as they closely follow the ball,” he explained.

Turning back to Dhoni, Chaudhary suggested that the former Indian captain could make a good umpire if he were willing to spend seven hours inside a cricket stadium.

“Dhoni is close to accurate most of the time. Often, he even stops others from appealing. He could become a good umpire, provided he’s ready to stay on the field for seven hours,” Chaudhary said.

While the idea of Dhoni becoming an umpire is purely speculative at this point, it’s also uncertain whether he will continue to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the 2025 season.
